About:

Our mailing list system is very flexible but that also means that there are is a large amount of information needed before we can create a new mailing list

Information Needed:

  1. Who will be the owner/moderator of this list?
    • There can be more than one owner/moderator
    • These are the users that will get E-mail messages to approve/deny posting requests and subscription requests (if needed)
    • A user does NOT need to be an owner/moderator to work with the list – if someone knows the administrative password, they can update the list
  2. Who can subscribe to the list – the options are:
    • Open: anyone can subscribe to the list at any time
    • Closed: subscribe requests are sent to the owner/moderator for approval
  3. Who can post to the list – the options are:
    • Unmoderated: All members of the list can post messages to the list
    • Moderated: Posts are sent to the owner/moderator for approval
    • Approved poster list: A given set of users can post to the list (they do not even need to be a member of the list) but all other users posts can either be sent for approval or automatically rejected
    • Any mix of the above. Some mailing list members can have postings moderated, some member can be unmoderated, some non-member posters can be unmoderated and some non-member posters can be automatically rejected.

There are some other options which can be changed but are normally kept at the default. These are:

  • Maximum message size: 1MB
  • Send messages out in a digest format once per day or immediate individual messages: individual messages
  • E-mail addresses that are banned from subscribing or posting: -none-
  • When someone replies to a mailing list posting, should the reply go to the poster of the message or to the mailing list: poster
  • What introductory message and a list description will be included: -none-
